QLAB PROFILE

WHO WE ARE

Qlab was founded in 2012 in the area of Ionia near Thessaloniki, by a group of experienced scientists on purpose to provide analytical and consulting services satisfying the demand of the market on analysis and quality control of food products, animal feeding stuffs, agricultural products, water and wastewater. Qlab offers scientifically documented advice about lubrication and irrigation for optimizing crops in the rural area, across the spectrum of agriculture and especially in fields of Organic Farming and Integrated Crop Management
Furthermore, Qlab has the required background and technical ability in the field of Environmental Pollution Monitoring & Analysis. It encompasses a complete range of solutions in the field of Environmental Quality control and Quality Management and provides defensible data and practical, scientifically driven information to help agri-food and bio-energy industries meet their compliance requirements and daily challenges. Qlab has specialized experience in facilities in determining quality horizons of water and wastewater, materials, chemicals, food products, Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (AAQM), Stack Monitoring, and in turnkey projects of Sewage Treatment Plants and Effluent Treatment (operation and maintenance). Besides analytical services, Qlab provides ISO consulting and validation support services to manufacture industries

Qlab facilities include both microbiological and physicochemical testing equipment. It employs 11 scientists, between them, 3 PhD candidates and 8 master’s holders, while periodically accepts students for their practical training in analysis sector. Qlab aims to continually expand its area of expertise and continually update its research technology and methodology by pursuing new collaborations and continuing education.
Since 2014, Qlab is accredited by E.SY.D. for the ISO 17025:2017 criteria with certificate number 909-3. Since 2015, Qlab has been certifying for the implementation of a Quality Management System for its services according to the international standard ISO 9001:2015 and it also holds certification for “verification of greenhouse gas emissions” according to the international standard ISO 14064-1: 2006 and Environmental Management System according to ISO 14001:2015. Annually, Qlab demonstrates high level of testing capability by conducting inter-laboratory test schemes such as SCHEMA, QMS, AQUACHECK, FAPAS and FEPAS.

Ορόσημα Qlab
The past four years, Qlab is in strong co-operation with biogas companies in applied industrial research for topics concerning the biogas sector. In this area, the two ongoing PhDs investigate new processes for disinfection and new materials for biogas refining and upgrade. In national level, Qlab is the first private laboratory with the technical capability and suitability to provide integrated services of very high standards in Anaerobic Digestion systems. Its services focus on preparing and storing supply substrates and secondary raw materials, as well as optimizing the biology of digestion processes.
Qlab in co-operation with Ergoplanning and GAIA perform annually numerous soil analysis tests. In some cases, Qlab monitors the application of solid digestate from the biogas sector as fertilizing agent. Qlab also performs characterization for composts and biofertilizers originated from this digestate. Before land application a fertilization plan is generated according to the soil nutritional needs.

Themistoklis Sfetsas PROJECT MANAGER - MSc CHEMIST
Themistoklis Sfetsas (male) holds a BSc (Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry, 2005) and MSc (Didactics in Chemistry, 2009) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During his PhD (2006-2013), that he never fulfilled, he studied the organic synthesis of prototype hydrazone and quinoline derivatives. He has been a research fellow for many years with CPERI/CERTH where he developed several methodologies for bio-oils and fuels analysis via GCxGC-ToFMS, an innovative technique (since 2009). Additionally, he has been part of many research projects concerning the evaluation and characterization of pyrolysis oils. Since 2012, Themistoklis is technical and quality control manager of Q-lab (privately held research & analytical lab) and he has developed a variety of analytical methodologies and quality systems. He has several publications in international journals (JCA, WIREs, Bioresource Technology, et al.) and is also a reviewer of many articles on energy and chromatographic analysis techniques. The past 2-3 years, he has been studying the optimization of anaerobic digestion processes and microalgal culture systems for the depletion of aquatic volumes. Recently (2019), he started a PhD with title “Anaerobic digestion effluents treatment by advanced microalgae cultivation”. He is also coordinator of the project NH3END and participates as collaborator in the projects IRISS, PUREHY, BIOCIRCULAR in the context of RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE, EPAnEK, NSRF 2014-2020 and ZEOCAT-3D in the context of H2020-NMBP-ST-IND-2018.
